Babality

Links: Ludum Dare Entry

Babality was made by myself and two friends in 72 hours for the 34th Ludum Dare game jam in December 2015. We had larger plans for the game, but unfortunately I got sick part way through the jam and wasn’t able to keep up with everything we wanted to do. The theme of the jam was a tie between “Two Button Controls” and “Growth” (it was the first time two themes had tied). I had an idea for a party game where the player and up to three friends could control a tank-like vehicle by standing on two giant buttons, and unlock more sections to their vehicle the more damage they caused. There were going to be more parts and different enemies, but due to being sick, all I was able to implement were the 5 base parts and enemy humans. The humans looked something like babies, and you were killing them, hence the title. I did all of the Unity work, while my two friends took care of the 3D asset creation and sound effects. People thought the game was fairly fun, but noticed that it wasn’t as finished as it could’ve been.

Things learned from Babality:

  • Babality had an issue with the players being able to leave their vehicle. I had to create a little system that allowed players to walk on the vehicle easily without messing up the physics of the cars.

  • Being sick doesn’t do great things for efficiency!
