It’s All OGRE Now!

It’s All OGRE Now! was made by myself and two friends in 72 hours for the 33rd Ludum Dare game jam in August 2015. It was one of our best received games, getting us 13th place in the Fun category, out of around 3000 entries. The theme of the jam was “You are the Monster”. We saw how well our previous physics-based game (Weapon Shortage) did, and decided to go for an over-the-top game where you play as a huge ogre, destroying the various peasants that dare stand in your path. I did all of the Unity work, including the procedurally generated environments and upgrade system, while my two friends took care of the 3D asset creation and sound effects. A number of people played the game live on Twitch, and we got many reviews saying how fun the game was.

Things learned from It’s All OGRE Now!:

  • It was my first experience with procedurally generated environments. Getting things to cooperate in a random setting was an interesting challenge to overcome.

  • It’s All OGRE Now! was the first time I’d had to deal with framerate optimization (due to the large world, and all of the peasants running around). I made a couple systems to try and deal with it, but they could’ve been better. I’ve since done a lot more optimization work.

  • Watching physics-enabled peasants get flung around is incredibly fun!
