Jump

Jump is the first game released by 2d4 Games, a small indie game development team that I co-founded. We wanted to think up something small that we could throw together in a minimal amount of time, and tossed around ideas until we got something we were happy with. Jump took two months to complete, from conception to release on the Google Play store, though we could’ve done it faster if we didn’t lose a couple weeks to Christmas and school exams. I was in charge of gameplay design, various Unity beautifying effects (particles, lights, backgrounds, audio syncing, etc), and the interface art and design. I also assisted with the audio and a fair amount with the programming of the game.

Things learned from Jump:

  • Jump was my first mobile game and, as we found out, that requires things to be done a little differently than when developing a PC game.

  • Implementing ads is an interesting challenge. It takes a little while to figure out how to get them to actually work, and once you do it can still cause a whole slew of problems.

  • I made an audio system that would do certain things (particle bursts, light flashes, etc) on beat with the music. It wasn’t perfect, but I’m seriously considering reworking it in order to make some music and rhythm-based games in the future.
