Mr. Bushido: Businessman Infinite

Mr. Bushido was made by myself and a friend in 72 hours for the 31st Ludum Dare game jam in December 2014. It was my first game jam, so I was quite excited to participate, and ended up with a pretty enjoyable product. The jam’s theme was “Entire Game on One Screen”. I came up with an idea of a game where you could see all the levels on top of each other, and you would need to use elements from each level to complete the others. We ended up with an interesting platformer where the character needed to reach the end doorway, and the player could create platforms to help the character out. Players would also need to drag other level’s platforms to certain levels in order to complete them. I did all of the unity stuff, while my friend took care of the pixel art assets. All in all, it was a lot of fun, and I’ve been doing game jams at every opportunity since.

Things learned from Mr. Bushido:

  • Mr. Bushido was my first time using Unity pro, so I took as much advantage of the new features as I could. Each level is displayed using Render Textures, which allow them to animate and have various effects put on them. It was interesting at the time, though I would do things differently if I were to make the game again.

  • Getting the mouse position on screen through different camera sizes at the same time is quite the task.

  • I started doing some stuff with Unity shaders, allowing for the backgrounds and tiles to be recoloured at runtime (you can see this effect when scrolling between levels).

  • 72 hours was not nearly as long as I thought it was!
