Weapon Shortage was made by myself and two friends in 72 hours for the 32nd Ludum Dare game jam in April 2015. We had a lot of fun, and I’m really starting to get into the whole game-jamming thing. The theme of the jam was “An Unconventional Weapon”. I thought up an idea of the player smithing together various weird items that they found lying around, and it evolved into an interesting game where you drag items around on an anvil and nail them together, taking your creation into an arena battle to the death to unlock new items! I did all of the unity work, while my two friends took care of the 3D asset creation and sound effects. Our game was very highly rated, with several people saying it was a “Youtube worthy” experience, and getting 11th place in Theme (out of around 3000 entries). We would’ve loved to continue to develop it, but we didn’t have much chance to between work and school.
Things learned from Weapon Shortage:
It was my first time using the new Unity physics based lighting, and it took a little while to get the hang of it. The game didn’t look terrible in the end, but I had to cut some corners in terms of graphics, and it definitely could’ve looked a lot nicer than it did.
Texturing is a job that should be left to artists, not programmers!
